Happy May!

We hope you all enjoyed the absolutely gorgeous spring week in Summerville. It was a perfect week to go outside and catch some rays. We took a piece of our own medicine from last week’s issue — Getting Outdoors — and spent as much time outside as we could.

We tried it with our little guy and he loved the extra outdoor time.

Don’t forget that the weekly farmers markets are in full swing for the spring! Head to downtown Summerville on Saturday mornings between 8am-1pm to support your local vendors. And if you see a woman waddling around this Saturday that looks like she’s 41 weeks pregnant stop and say hi, because it’s probably me. 🤪 Check out the reel below to take a tour of the market.

Be sure to join the Huger Park volunteer day hosted by Summerville Parks & Rec. Volunteers will be helping with landscaping and staining benches to keep the park beautiful! You can sign up to volunteer here.

To Do: Bike Riding on the Sawmill Branch Trail

If you live near Downtown Summerville, you probably know about the massive bridge they’re building right now on Berlin G. Meyers (will finish in 2026 I’m told). But if you have any little ones, the construction makes a walk or bike ride even more exhilarating!

There are massive excavators, dump trucks, and a paved trail across a 6-mile path. We walk and ride the trail at least once a week and love the time it gives us together as a family.

At a few points on the trail, the walkway itself is blocked with construction, but they’ve temporarily turned the new, unused road into an extension of the trail so you can continue to go forward right in the middle of the newly paved road without fear of cars or traffic (there are actually signs which encourage this!)

I highly recommend going for a long ride before it gets super hot.

An Event: Festive Weekend Roundup

This first weekend of May is full of fun, especially for those with any affection for Star Wars or Cinco de Mayo. Instead of featuring one event this week, we’re doing a round up of a variety of events so there’s something for everyone.

For the Star Wars Lover:

  • Previously featured Baked by Brit is hosting a Star Wars themed baking class (for all ages) on Saturday May, 4th from 2-3:30. Participants can choose between making a Chewbacca Cake or 6 Yoda Cupcakes. Go to her page to sign up and see more details. What can be better than time with your kid and Star Wars baking!?

For the Cinco de Mayo celebrator:

For the family friendly live music fan:

Restaurant: Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant

Jaw-Droppingly Fast

Delicious

Affordable

Extensive Outdoor Seating

Those are all things we LOVE as parents when it comes to eating out with our kids. Since our little guy was just weeks old, Margaritas became our go-to restaurant when we needed to get out and take a break from cooking and cleaning.

We’ve never waited for a seat, their staff is so kind, and the food is always satisfying (unlimited chips are always welcome in our family). And we are not joking when we say our jaw drops with how quickly our food comes out when it’s our small family eating, which as you know can be the key to an enjoyable meal out with a child. We love the patio and our son loves to watch the train go by downtown Summerville as we eat (at almost exactly 6pm every weekday).

Pro-tip: Order the fajitas to split with multiple people or get tacos/enchiladas off the side order menu to save some money. It really can be a super affordable meal.

One of our first restaurant excursions with baby boy as new parents enjoying the Margaritas patio.

BONUS: This weekend they have a Cinco de Mayo fiesta and you’ll get a free T-shirt with the purchase of a margarita!

Palmetto Piece: Enjoying Each Stage with our Children

In each stage of parenthood, it’s easy to feel frustrated by the particular needs our children have. With young kids it’s the whining, tantrums, and pressure of being their entire universe. As they grow it’s the complaining, complex emotions, questionable choices, and coping with no longer being their entire universe. As parents of young kids, we want to focus on embracing and enjoying each stage instead of wishing our kids would grow up faster to overcome whatever challenge we are facing. We found this article by Lucy Jo Home to have some helpful tips to enjoying each season and stage of development our kids are in.

  1. Laugh way more. Laughter is the antidote to anger, stress, worry. When you are feeling frustrated by your child or a certain situation, practice finding the humor in a situation. From experience as a middle school teacher, I know this is a skill that can be learned through practice. In fact, one of the first pieces of advice I got when I started teaching was to “make sure I laugh each day.” While harsh tones and negativity are sure to increase the gap between us and our kids, laughter brings us closer to them. Check out this article “Laughter is the Best Medicine” to see how magical it really is.

  2. Be mindful of the expectations and goals you have for yourself and your kids. If they are unrealistic, you will experience discouragement and frustration. Take a little time to do some research on what is developmentally appropriate for your child to help you meet them where they are at. This has helped me be more patient with our son’s whining- while we want to teach him not to whine, we also understand it’s a part of his development.

  3. Don’t compare with others. Focus on your family and creating the culture and rhythms that you want to have with your unique set of family members instead trying to fit into someone else’s mold. This allows you to celebrate the unique stages and interests of your family with less stress.
