Good morning, Palmetto Parent!

This is hands-down one of my favorite times of year in Summerville—when the azaleas are popping and the whole town just feels alive with color. It’s weeks like this that make names like “Azalea Park,” “Flowertown Festival,” and “Flowertown of the Pines” make total sense. Everything looks extra vibrant and happy, and honestly, it just puts me in a better mood—it’s like the whole town is showing off its best self. 🌸

For those of you who are wrapping up spring break, we hope you’ve had a great week. And ICYMI last week we put out our spring Palmetto Parents family fun bingo board! Check out ideas for family fun this spring and see how to play in last week’s Palmetto Piece. The winning family gets a $25 gift card to Rita’s!

LOCAL EVENT

Young Entrepreneur Market

Spring market season is arriving and what better way to celebrate than by supporting local and nurturing young dreamers! ✨ The Young Entrepreneur Market is back for its second event, giving kids ages 7 to 17 the chance to showcase their creativity, innovation, and business skills.

This market is truly one-of-a-kind—every item sold is handmade by the kids themselves, with minimal parental involvement. That means no reselling of pre-made goods, toys, or personal items—just authentic, handcrafted products created with passion and originality. From baked goods and slime to handmade jewelry, woodworking, bookmarks, and potion/calming jars, these young entrepreneurs have poured their hearts into their products.

📅 Date: Sunday, March 30th
⏰ Time: 11am-3pm
📍 Location: The Knot Burger Pub, 208 E 5th N St, Summerville

More Than a Market—A Community Cause

Not only does this event give kids the opportunity to develop real-world business skills and share their talents, but it also helps give back to the community. On the day of the market, 10% of all food and drink proceeds at The Knot will go toward supporting Marley Jane, a local young girl bravely fighting B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Marley is undergoing CAR T immunotherapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and this event is one small way our community can rally behind her and her family.

RESTAURANT

Biscuit Belly

If you needed one more reason to try Biscuit Belly, here it is—you can get a free basket of bonuts (biscuit donuts) just by signing up for their loyalty program! 🍩🙌 These fluffy, biscuit-based donuts are coated in cinnamon sugar and served with sweet dipping sauces, making them the perfect way to kick off your breakfast experience at this welcoming downtown spot.

Since opening, Biscuit Belly has quickly become a family favorite—our son loves the shimmery wall and the mini biscuits for kids, while we love the friendly, welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit feel personal. The staff are incredibly kind, and even after just a few visits, we’ve already started building relationships with them. Watching the biscuit-making process through the front window is also a fun touch—our baby even had a face-making contest with the woman rolling out the dough.

With the sad closing of Eva’s downtown Summerville, we’re grateful for a different breakfast spot in the heart of downtown. We’re also grateful for their early hours, especially since other spots downtown don’t open until later in the morning for breakfast (and with kids that early option is appreciated). Even though it’s part of a franchise, Biscuit Belly feels unique and homey, with a warm and inviting vibe that keeps us coming back.

What’s on the Menu?

Biscuit Belly specializes in scratch-made biscuits, loaded with bold flavors and Southern-inspired toppings that take classic breakfast favorites to the next level.

🍳 Signature Biscuit Sandwiches – Try the "Rockwell" (buttermilk fried chicken, cheddar, goetta gravy) or the "Bonuts & Bacon" (candied bacon, bonuts, and house-made jam).
🥓 Loaded Biscuit Platters – Enjoy biscuits & gravy with your choice of sausage, goetta, or mushroom gravy for a hearty start to the day.
🥞 Sweet Treats – Indulge in bonuts, pancakes, or Nutella-stuffed French toast if you're craving something on the sweeter side.
🥗 Vegetarian & Gluten-Free Options – The menu is clearly labeled to help you find options that fit your dietary needs.

☕ Drinks: Biscuit Belly also offers a variety of coffee drinks, including bottomless drip coffee and specialty lattes. My personal favorite? Their oat milk latte with honey and cinnamon on top—it’s the absolute best way to start the morning! If you're in the mood for something stronger, they also have a great selection of brunch cocktails to sip alongside your meal.

Hours & Location

📍 Location: 118 W Richardson Ave Suite 101, Summerville

If you haven’t been yet, stop by and give them a try! Whether you're craving a hearty biscuit sandwich, a sweet treat, or a perfectly crafted morning drink, Biscuit Belly is a welcoming and delicious addition to downtown Summerville’s breakfast scene.

PALMETTO PIECE

Prioritizing Connection

This year, one of our goals was to go on a date every week. We’ve always gone on dates here and there, but we’ve never had a consistent rhythm. And in this current season of parenting—where every night feels unpredictable—we realized we needed something more intentional. We haven’t gone away or even had more than 3–4 hours without the kids, mostly because our youngest doesn’t take a bottle. But we knew we needed time just for us, and time where we weren’t distracted by technology, so we could give each other our full attention.

Getting babysitters felt intimidating at first, but after a few phone calls to neighbors and friends, we were able to put together a list of sitters we truly trust—so that finding childcare wouldn’t be the thing that held us back. It’s not always fancy. Some weeks we stay in because of sickness or life, but we still prioritize time together—whether that’s a charcuterie board on the couch or sushi and a movie in bed.

A friend of mine, who’s just a year away from being an empty nester, recently reminded me how important it is to keep investing in your marriage. “One day the kids will leave,” she said, “and you don’t want to feel like strangers, or like your whole life is derailing.” That really stuck with me.

And if you’re a single parent, this still applies—make space for connection. Whether that’s time with friends, pursuing a hobby, or simply carving out a bit of space that’s just yours. Our kids are so important, but we’re still people outside of them. Even if it’s just a couple of hours after bedtime with a babysitter there to sit in the house—make the effort. It's those moments of connection—with our spouses, our friends, and ourselves—that help us not just survive parenting, but truly thrive in it.

Love,

The Berks 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
