🌴 Pickles, Bars, and Pickle Bar in Nexton

Everything you need to thrive as a parent in Summerville, SC.

Another Beautiful Summerville Weekend 🌴

This week was a chaotic one for the Berk household, but we’re excited for another weekend of perfect Summerville weather.

We were cooped in the house sick all week, so sunshine and outdoors is a welcome change from how we’ve spent the last several days.

Reply to this email to tell us what you have planned over the next few days (we’re always looking for new things to try!) Of course we’ll also share some ideas with you in this newsletter, but feel free to check out some of our past newsletters if you need more ideas.

To Do: Pickle Bar in Nexton

If you’ve driven in the Nexton area, the building with the large “Pickle Bar” sign has likely caught your eye. This new attraction, which includes a Southern-inspired restaurant, sports bar, large yard with games — and of course, Pickleball courts — is much more than just a place to take Pickleball lessons. If you head over this weekend, you’re likely to find live music and families with kids of all ages enjoying the game yard.

They are currently expanding the seating in the yard and the patio to host even more guests. It’s a popular place! Whether you enjoy Pickleball or not (I personally have no clue how to play Pickleball, can someone please tell me), this venue promises to be a fun excursion for date night or a family outing.

Check out their Facebook page for details about karaoke and themed trivia they have the first week of the month, and to see what they’re up to in the next few days.

P.S. If you happen to live near the Nexton Parkway, some of our readers told us you can drive your golf cart right to the front door (because apparently everyone in Nexton has a golf cart).

An Event: More Festivals and Strawberries

In case you’re not festivaled-out from last weekend, this weekend is the annual Jedburg Junction Strawberry Festival.

The festival is in Knightsville located at 850 E Butternut Road, Summerville.

Jedburg Junction already hosts weekly farmer’s markets, but this weekend is a whole different level. At the strawberry festival you’ll see live music, food trucks, lots of treats from local bakers, and of course… strawberries!

Shuler Strawberries and Peaches is being featured this year at the Strawberry Shack.

And if you missed the local All Thing Acre Petting Zoo at the Flowertown Festival, you’ll have a chance to see them again here. We took our toddler last weekend and we were equally impressed and creeped out by the amount and size of snakes that they had. Our son loved petting the bunnies and chicks and getting up close with tortoises and lizards. We felt like it was definitely worth the money (only $10 per kid).

The festival hours this weekend are Saturday, April 13th 10am- 4pm and Sunday, April 14th 12pm-4pm.

Restaurant: Wild Ginger

Need some high quality sushi fast? That’s the exact dilemma my husband and I were in this week. After kiddo was down for the night, we watched the movie East Side Sushi (not a new release, but we highly recommend it). Even though it was 9pm we could NOT watch a movie about sushi without eating some.

So we paused the movie the moment they showed a piece of sushi on the screen (basically the first scene), and took out our phones to order takeout.

Luckily, one of the best sushi/hibachi/Asian restaurants in Summerville, Wild Ginger, is close to our home and has an unbelievably fast pickup/delivery time. We were back in bed eating sushi by 9:30 and it completed the date night.

Wild Ginger is a great place to eat in person, but we’ve particularly found that using their site to do pickup orders has been great for our family. (Eating sushi with a toddler can be a little challenging sometimes, but that won’t stop our sushi consumption). Also, you get 10% off your first online order.

We have tried a variety of dishes there, but some of our favorite sushi rolls are the Never Try Never and The S*x on the Beach 🙃

Wild Ginger is located in the plaza with Harris Teeter on the intersection of Bacons Bridge/Old Trolley Road.

Palmetto Piece: What We Learned

Last week we asked for advice about adding another baby to our family and making the transition from a family of three to a family of four.

By far the most common response was to make sure that our toddler still gets lots of special time and connection with us. It’s been good to consider what special things we can do with just him, but it can quickly start feeling overwhelming.

This brief article on Tips for Spending Quality Time with Your Child helped us breathe a sigh of relief. Whether you are in a transitional time with your family or not, this article had some great reminders that quality > quantity when it comes to spending time with your kids.

Life is busy, so it’s important to make the most of your time with your kiddos and let go of guilt if you don’t have hours to spend giving them your undivided attention (because let’s face it, that’s not realistic!) Some goals we have for connection with our toddler include making sure we aren’t distracted on our phones during meals times, bath time, and bedtime, as those are built in points of connection.

We also want to try to do one activity of his choosing every day (both dad and mom separately, even if it’s just for 10 minutes).

Check out the article for nine tips on how to make sure the time you get to spend with your child is high quality!

Until next week!
