🌴 A Summerville Treasure Hunt

Good morning, Palmetto Parent!

We hope you’ve had a great week. Perhaps you’ve spent a little time decluttering or discovered your new favorite local dessert after being inspired by last week’s issue?

Reply to this email and let us know if so!

We had a great time cheering Daniel on as he participated in The ARK’s 5k on Saturday. It was great to see so many runners giving it their all and participating to support a great cause. We were so impressed with the young kids who raced that were absolutely booking it. If one of those kids was yours, congrats. At our post-run breakfast at Eva’s we were discussing how inspired we were by the kids running with their parents. So cool.

We hope you all enjoy any time off you get for Labor Day. Check out the events section to see what exciting things are happening this week. Also, be sure to save the date for these September events that we’ll be featuring:

  • UPublic Works Art Center Block Party, 9/7 10am-1pm

  • Third Thursday, 9/19 5:30-8:30pm

  • Sweet Tea Festival, 9/21 4-7pm

  • Harvest Festival at Wassamassaw Park, 12pm-3pm

To Do: Join Story Time at Main Street Reads

One of our family’s favorite shops in the downtown Summerville square is Main Street Reads bookstore. For my mom and grandma’s birthdays, I almost always pop in and let whoever is working know the genre and style of book I’m looking for and they lead me to some amazing reads to gift.

For awhile now I’ve known they host “Stories on the Square” on Wednesday mornings for young kids, but haven’t made it out. Finally this past week we decided to check it out and WOW it was worth it. When we got there, the fire chief from the local station was waiting to read to the kids. For my smoke detector obsessed, fire truck loving son this was more than I could have ever hoped. My son was also thrilled that there were fruit snacks and juice boxes to enjoy. If I asked him he probably would remember it more as a snack time than a story time, but that’s okay. The host and the fire chief took turns reading six fun books for young kids, they had the opportunity to ask the fire chief questions, and they were so kind to bring treat bags for all the kids with stickers, mini fire trucks, lollipops, and more. They also gave out fireman hats to all the kids. It was so special.

Main Street Reads hosts “Stories on the Square” every Wednesday morning at 9:30am.

Every other week they have a special host that brings a guest (like the fire chief). On Sept. 4th their guest will be a pet sitter and on the 18th it will be a policeman. On the other weeks, the staff from the store do the story time. Every time there are snacks and small chairs for the kids. We will definitely be back to enjoy more story times.

The bookstore also has other great opportunities for older kids and adults. They have regular writer’s groups, book clubs, and special author visits. On the 3rd Monday of each month they host a young reader book club which is perfect for kids in their upper elementary years.

Check out their site for a list of full events that they host.

Restaurant: Yokoso

When hibachi and sushi are calling your name, Yokoso Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar is a great Summerville option for you!

Every time we go we are throughly impressed with the unique combination of flavors and beautiful presentation. The restaurant is split into two sections. On the left side, you have a more traditional restaurant experience and that is what we have done each time. The ambience is fun — the ceiling is painted like the night sky and the walls have patios with plants to give it a feeling of sitting in a courtyard. We’ve had no trouble getting a seat right away on that side, even on peak times Saturday nights.

On the right side of the restaurant you can get a full hibachi experience and performance where the chef cooks in front of you, serving you fresh, delicious hibachi and a fun performance. When we’ve been there, we’ve seen drums come out and it always sounds like a good time. If you want to sit on the right side for the dinner and a show experience, I would recommend getting a reservation as that side is always more crowded. The restaurant offers kids hibachi plates and prides themselves on being a family friendly restaurant, although we’ve enjoyed date night there as well.

Palmetto Piece: Puff Out Your Chest, Take A Deep Breath

I came across this video last week and showed it to my husband and we’ve been singing it to ourselves all week. It’s been a week full of sleep regressions, toddler emotions, and very little sleep.

It’s helpful to have simple tools like deep breathing that’s proven to lower your heart rate and cortisol levels. This is something we’ve been helping our toddler work on, too, in moments of high emotion. So this week when you feel that heart rate increasing, frustration or anxiety rising, puff out your chest, take a deep breath — it’s going to be okay.
