TO DO

Visit Givhans Ferry State Park

As the temps cool down and the sun is shining, one of the best places to spend an autumn day with your family is Givhans Ferry State Park. Located about thirty minutes outside of Summerville, this state park offers the perfect blend of outdoor activities, nature, and relaxation for families looking to make the most of the season.

Hiking Trails: Givhans Ferry has several scenic hiking trails for families. The River Bluff Trail is especially popular in the fall, offering beautiful views of the Edisto River and the opportunity to spot wildlife. This easy-to-moderate 1.5-mile loop is a great way for kids to burn off energy.

Picnicking: Fall is the perfect time for a family picnic, and Givhans Ferry State Park has plenty of spots for you to set up lunch. The park offers picnic shelters and tables throughout, so you can pack your favorite fall treats and enjoy a peaceful meal.

Fishing and Canoeing: If your family enjoys being on the water, bring along your fishing poles or rent a canoe to explore the Edisto River. The river is one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America, and it great for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. Plus, fishing off the riverbanks can be a fun, relaxing way to bond with your kids.

Camping: For families who enjoy camping, Givhans Ferry has both tent camping and cabins. With cooler fall temperatures, camping is a comfortable and enjoyable way to experience the outdoors overnight. Roast marshmallows over a campfire, tell stories, and immerse your family in the quiet beauty of the park after sunset.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit Givhans Ferry State Park. The weather is cooler, the bugs are fewer, and the leaves add a stunning backdrop to every activity. Whether you’re spending a day hiking, or staying overnight for some camping under the stars, this park offers a peaceful escape from the bustle of everyday life while keeping your kids entertained in nature.

Location: 746 Givhans Ferry Road, Ridgeville, SC 29472

Hours: The park is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Cost: Entry fees are affordable, typically around $3 per adult and $1 for children ages 6-15, with kids under 5 entering for free.

Want to bond with your child over art? Check out Abstract Adventures Parent & Me art classes. These classes allow your little to explore their creativity with art, music, and play while bonding with you as their guide. RESTAURANT

Talucci’s Bakery

Even though it just opened two weeks ago, we kept hearing about downtown Summerville’s newest Italian bakery and coffee shop, Talucci’s. We had to go try it for ourselves and I have to say we definitely understand the hype.

Summerville couple and owners Jaclyn and Charles renovated the space at 145 Central Ave. (previously Simple Treasures) to make it a charming and inviting venue to show off their European inspired pastries and chocolate (and coffee). You can find pastries like bagels, muffins, and croissants there in the morning and tiramisu, strawberry Italian cake, éclairs, cannolis, Lobster Tail, and Sfogliatelle in the afternoon. They also have fresh Italian cookies, breads, and gelato available for purchase.

Truly all the Italian goods you could ever desire. 🤤

When our family went, we enjoyed an everything bagel, blueberry muffin, and a gluten free chocolate muffin. Our toddler just keep exclaiming “MMMMM!” as he ate his muffin and as someone who is gluten free I was in heaven as I enjoyed my light and airy chocolate muffin (although 100% that was just eating dessert for breakfast… 😂). Daniel (a coffee snob) was throughly impressed with the drip coffee (their Italian take on a pour over).

Even though their shop is very busy and the owners are running on very little sleep, on her own initiative Jaclyn spent about ten minutes talking with us and here were a few things that impressed us about Talucci’s.

  • Jaclyn and her team spent two weeks doing barista training in Florence so they could provide an excellent Italian coffee experience to customers.

  • Charles is the owner but also the pastry chef for the bakery. He has extensive experience with baking and pastry. His father is an Italian Olympian chef and was Charles’ inspiration and mentor.

  • They have been so popular that they sold out their pastry items many days since opening, but are working hard to increase production by getting a second barista machine to

    speed up production.

Charles and Jaclyn share eight kids between the two of them and it was clear that family is at the heart of their operation. It’s such a joy to have another family centered business with such a high quality of goods and operations join downtown Summerville!

We loved it so much that we went back the next day for more

Keep an eye out for their special menus for Thanksgiving and Christmas this holiday season. And if you’re looking to buy in bulk, just give them a week’s notice so they can accommodate your order.

Get Creative With Your Candy

Wondering what to do with all that Halloween candy besides eating it? Here are some creative, fun, and even educational ideas to make the most of your kids' candy stash:

  • Donate It: Many organizations, like Operation Shoebox and Troopathon, accept unopened candy to send in care packages to U.S. troops and veterans. It’s a great way to teach your kids about giving back.

  • Make a Candy Craft: Use leftover candy to create fun crafts, like candy wreaths or decorating gingerbread houses. You can also glue colorful candies onto poster boards or picture frames for a creative twist.

  • Bake with It: Get creative in the kitchen by adding chopped candy to brownies, cookies, or popcorn. You can even make candy bark by melting chocolate and sprinkling crushed candies on top.

  • Science Experiments: Turn candy into a learning tool! Use it for sorting, counting, and even fun science experiments like testing how different candies dissolve in water or react to heat. Check out this link to see some ideas for specific candy experiments.

  • Candy Exchange or Buy-Back Programs: Some dentists offer candy buy-back programs where kids can trade their sweets for small rewards or even money. Check with your dentist to see if they offer something like this.

These options are not only a fun way to use up candy, but they also promote creativity, learning, and giving back!

That’s it for today! See you next Friday 🙂

Love,

The Berks 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
