Happy Thanksgiving from Palmetto Parents

In partnership with

Happy Thanksgiving, Palmetto Parent!

We wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving, full of connection, relaxation, and hopefully some delicious food. We are writing a shortened issue this week with information on tree lightings next week, where to find Santa in Summerville, and some ideas of games you can play with your family today.

If your family could benefit from a free Thanksgiving meal, the Family Restaurant off of E. North 5th St. will be open from 11am-3pm (or until gone) serving free Thanksgiving dinner. It is a buffet style dinner and you are welcome to eat in the restaurant or take it to go.

SAVE THE DATE: There are LOTS of family activities and fun things going on in Summerville.

Below are some events to mark in your calendar. We will be giving more information about them as they come.

  • Support the Azalea Park Children’s Discovery Garden by going to the ribbon cutting ceremony and enjoying free temporary tattoos and balloon art on Friday, December 6, at 3pm.

  • Have a fun night playing glow in the dark mini-golf at Gahagan Park for the Glow Golf event on Friday, December 6th.

  • Watch the Summerville Christmas Parade and enjoy the artisan market downtown Summerville on Sunday, December 8th.

  • Enjoy a holiday movie in the stadium and free games and arts & crafts for kids at Moonlit Movies at McKissick Field on Saturday, December 14th.

SHOP LOCAL: Saturday is small business Saturday and it’s the perfect time to support your local Summerville businesses!

If you prefer to shop online but still support local, check out our Summerville Parent Gift Guide. Almost all the gifts can be purchased online. Some require local pickup once completed, but it’s at your convenience without the crowds and lines. This is the perfect way to shop if you don’t like the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping!

Finally, if you’d like to include your business in our weekly newsletter over 3,100 engaged Summerville parents, we would love to feature you. Click here to learn about becoming a Palmetto Parents sponsor.

TO DO

Find Santa in Summerville

The breakfast with Santa at the community center is unfortunately full, but beyond the upcoming tree lighting and Christmas parade, here’s a list of a few other places you can find Santa in Summerville this December.

  • Stop by the green space in Nexton Square and see Santa on December 4th, 11th, or 18th from 3:30-5:30pm. This event is free thanks to Tweedle Beedle.

  • Come to the Knightsville General Store on Saturday, December 14th between 11am-2pm for some shopping and a free visit with Santa. There will be local vendors and the cafe will be open for breakfast and lunch. They ask that you bring a nonperishable food items for a local pantry to get a picture.

Thanksgiving Games to Play with your Family

If you want a way to keep your family entertained and get people talking, try out one of these family games at the Thanksgiving table!

  1. Thanksgiving Photo Scavenger Hunt: Come up with a list of specific topics (like vacations, favorite books, foods, etc.) and have everyone search their phone for a picture of something in that topic. Set a timer for 30 seconds or a minute and everyone who finds a picture of the topic gets a point. Have everyone show their picture and explain it to the table. Whoever has the most points at the end wins! You can be creative with the prize: winner is the first to go to the dessert table, or they don’t have to help clean up. Or maybe you’re the type of family where bragging rights is enough…

  2. Thanksgiving Would You Rather: We’re big fans of would you rather questions. They always get the conversation going. Take a Thanksgiving spin on this game by asking questions like “Would you rather eat Thanksgiving with complete strangers or all alone?” or “Would you rather wash your hair in mashed potatoes or take a bath in gravy?” Take a peek at this blog for more questions and a purchasable PDF to the would you rather questions, Thanksgiving bingo, and Thanksgiving mad libs.

  3. Thanksgiving Gratitude Dice Game: Grab some dice and get the gratitude flowing! Write out a chart of numbers attached to a prompt. For example if you roll a one, you tell the table about someone you are grateful for. If you roll at two, you talk about your favorite Thanksgiving memory. If you roll a three, you talk about something you love about the person next to you, etc. Depending on how many prompts you want you can have people roll two dice and have any numbers of prompts! (Hint: if you Google “Thanksgiving Dice Game” you’ll get lots of ideas for prompts and you can curate it all for your group).
