RESTAURANT

Social Urban Bistro

Last week, we spent our date night at Social Urban Bistro, the new Cuban restaurant that recently opened on Central Avenue (in the space formerly home to Nancy’s—RIP). Having heard so many rave reviews, especially about their green fries, we knew we had to check it out for ourselves.

Social Urban Bistro serves authentic Cuban dishes with bold, flavorful ingredients. Their menu includes picadillo, empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, and those famous green fries that everyone is talking about. They also offer several seafood options featuring local shrimp, like shrimp in garlic sauce, shrimp in chipotle sauce, and coconut curry shrimp—a great touch for Lowcountry seafood lovers.

The space is small but cozy, and the team has done a fantastic job creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with the green fries as an appetizer, and they absolutely lived up to the hype. For our entrees, we ordered picadillo and pork shoulder, both rich in flavor and cooked to perfection. And then came the sweet surprise—complimentary flan and tiramisu for dessert. Both were decadent and delicious, rounding out an incredible meal.

While the restaurant doesn’t have a designated kids’ menu, we’d feel comfortable bringing our family for an early dinner. The vibe is great for a date night but still welcoming for families who enjoy trying new flavors together.

If you’ve dined at Cuban Gypsy Pantry or El Callao Latin Fusion, you’ll be excited to know that Social Urban Bistro comes from the same creator. The pride and passion behind the food are evident—not just in the dishes but in the hospitality and atmosphere. Whether you’re dining in or ordering through DoorDash, this is a must-try spot for anyone craving delicious Cuban cuisine with great vibes.

PALMETTO PIECE

The Power of Showing Up, Even on Hard Days

Today was hard. Really hard. My husband is out of town, and I’m staying with my parents, which has been a huge help. But even with the extra support, my son’s behavior has been challenging.

He’s been stubborn, bossy, and just plain mean. Every little request turns into a struggle. Every attempt at connection feels like it’s met with defiance. I know he’s feeling all kinds of big emotions, but that doesn’t make it any easier in the moment. And honestly? Today, I felt defeated.

As I sat there at the end of the day, exhausted and wondering if I handled things the right way, I reminded myself of something simple but important: I am the parent. My job isn’t to be perfect. It’s to show up—steady, constant, unwavering. Even when it feels like nothing I do is working. Even when my patience is running thin. Even when I feel like I’m failing.

And the beauty of parenting? Tomorrow is a new day. A fresh start. Another chance to show up, love deeply, and guide him through his emotions, even when they come out in difficult ways.

So tonight, I’m choosing to let go of the frustration and guilt. Tomorrow, I will wake up, take a deep breath, and try again. Because that’s what love looks like in the hard moments. And one day, when he looks back, I hope he remembers that no matter what, I was there.

Love,

The Berks 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
